Chapter 7 – Say What Now?

Nearly eight months of practice had taught Odessa Blakemore to not show any outward expression of joy, emotion, or reaction to anything said or done in her presence. She employed that practice in the back seat of the car as they approached the new property, in which the families were to share for getaways. It seemed that no matter where they went in the world, getting away was a misnomer. Every damned body must have gotten the memo of where they were going or when they were planning to be there. Now, this bitch.

Outwardly, she remained calm.

Inwardly, long ragged claws scraped at her guts, digging in like an unwanted parasite, infecting everything it touched. A myriad of questions zoomed through her noggin about the snake woman and her husband. She trusted Saxton with her life. He had never given her reason to doubt him, and she knew, in her soul, there was a perfectly logical explanation.

They arrived at the house with Ryanne almost jumping from the car before it came to a complete stop. Belva was fast on her heels, irritated, for what reason Odessa didn’t know. Odessa simply needed some time alone with her husband to have a rational discussion. The entire drive back, she’d calculated his potential responses. She did not, however, factor in her sister or Belva’s.

Entering their new vacation home, she was pleased to see that Saxton and Roget had made it back safely. The two men sat at the table eating pasta salad as if they’d done nothing more than spend the morning sightseeing on the island. She wanted to broach the subject gently.

“What the hell, Saxton?” Ryanne burst out.

Odessa stepped in between her sister and her husband, holding up her hand. Speaking softly, she stated, “Ryanne, this is a private conversation between me and my husband.”

“No. No, it’s not. People like to try and kill you two, which makes me collateral damage. My first marriage, I was married a psycho, who was sent to keep an eye on you two. In my second marriage, I am still doing repairs to our home from the shoot out from your last visit, so this is not private at all,” she said adamantly. “Again Saxton, who the hell is that woman, and are we prepared for whatever she has coming for you next? There is a small arsenal here, but nothing like at our house.”

Belva stood close to Roget, looking like a page from Vogue, her hand perched on her hip with the $2,000 handbag hanging from her arm. “Yes Saxton, are you planning to kill anyone on our vacation?”

Saxton’s brow crinkled, looking at three very pissed off women standing before him. His sister wasn’t his concern.

Ryanne was Eduardo’s issue, but his wife was a different story.

“Her name is Copperhead. She is an assassin who works for Elizondo Rentería. She is very good at her job, and she is very pissed off with me,” he said calmly.

“Any particular reason why?” Odessa wanted to know.
